How it works

Tired of rushed visits, inexperienced providers, and care that never looks at the whole person?

Most people who find us have tried a medication or two, sat through hurried appointments, and still don't feel right. You get a prescriber with more than 20 years in behavioral health and 20,000+ patient visits, who looks for what is driving your symptoms, from medications that never fit to sleep, stress, nutrition, and medical issues, and builds a plan that fits your life.

  • A full-hour first evaluation, not a 15-minute checklist
  • Medication options explained plainly, with the tradeoffs
  • Follow-ups focused on how you're doing, not just refills
  • Prescriptions sent to the pharmacy you already use
  • Sleep, stress, and nutrition looked at alongside medication
  • Lab work ordered when it matters, coordinated with your other providers

Psychiatric evaluation

A full hour by video to understand your history, what you have tried, and what you want to be different. Dr. Justin looks for the root of your symptoms, not just a label, and you leave with a clear plan.

  • 60 minutes, same-week availability
  • Covered by most insurance plans, just your copay
  • $220 if you prefer to self-pay

Ongoing medication management

Follow-up visits to check progress, fine-tune doses, manage side effects, and adjust as life changes. Every 2 to 4 weeks at first, then less often as things settle.

  • 30 minutes, refills handled between visits
  • Covered by most insurance plans, just your copay
  • $120 if you prefer to self-pay

Care for the whole family

We see kids, teens, and adults, so one practice can care for a child with ADHD and a parent with anxiety. Medication is one tool; we also look at sleep, nutrition, stress, school or work, and the supports around you.

  • Children, adolescents, and adults
  • Parents included in every step for minors
  • Insurance accepted for every age, including AHCCCS

We are in network with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, TriWest, AHCCCS and more, so most patients pay only their usual copay. No insurance? Self-pay is simple and priced up front. See all accepted plans.

Integrative psychiatry

Body, mind, and lifestyle. All three, not just a prescription.

Integrative psychiatry is not a substitute for evidence-based medicine. It is evidence-based medicine with the rest of the picture filled in. You still get careful medication management. We also look at the things that quietly drive symptoms and that a rushed visit never gets to.

1

Body

We look for the physical causes that can drive or mimic psychiatric symptoms: sleep, hormones, nutrition, inflammation, gut health, and the medications you already take.

2

Mind

We connect your symptoms to your story: the beliefs you carry about yourself, past trauma, and the patterns that keep showing up.

3

Lifestyle

We work on the things around you that shape how you feel: relationships, food, movement, sleep, and the environment you live and work in.

Dr. Justin spent six years on inpatient psychiatric units, where many patients arrived on a long list of medications that no one had stepped back to review as a whole. Sleep, medical conditions, substance use, pain, and stress were often left out of the plan. Better Place Now was built to do that review up front, on your first visit, so the plan fits you instead of a checklist. It is the same approach Dr. Justin teaches other clinicians, and you get it as a patient here.

Sleep

Poor sleep looks like depression, anxiety, and ADHD. We assess sleep first, before we chase the symptoms it may be causing.

Lab work

Basic lab work when it matters, because medical issues can look like psychiatric ones, coordinated with your primary care provider.

Nutrition and movement

Practical changes that support mood and focus, sized to what you can actually do this month.

Medication review

Every medication you take, why it was started, and whether it still earns its place. Fewer, better-chosen medications when possible.

Stress and support

Work, school, relationships, and the people around you. Therapy when it helps, referrals when someone else is the right fit.

Your goals

Feeling like yourself again means something specific to you. That is the target, not a score on a form.

What the research says
2xthe odds of a depression response when insomnia is treated directly, on top of usual care (19 trials, 4,808 people).
3xhigher depression response when a trauma history gets trauma-focused therapy (136 trials).
NNT 2one extra person improves for every two who add supervised exercise for depression (41 trials).

Questions we answer at your first visit

You have probably already asked yourself some of these.

The research above tells us what tends to be true for people in general. What is true for you takes a full hour and your whole history. That is what the first visit is for.

Request an appointment
  • Is this depression, or is something else going on in my body?
  • Do I actually need this medication, or did it just never get reviewed?
  • Why do I feel worse every time my sleep falls apart?
  • How much of this is what I have been through?
  • Which change would help me most, and how do I make it stick?
  • Is my kid's behavior a phase, or should someone take a look?

Your first visit

What the first appointment is actually like

Written to take the dread out of it. No surprises, no paperwork you weren't warned about.

Step 12 minutes

You reach out

A short request form or a phone call. We ask only what we need to schedule you: your name, your insurance if you have it, and when you're available.

No symptom questionnaires and no history yet. That comes later, with your provider.

Step 2Within 1 business day

We confirm your cost and your time

We verify your benefits and tell you your expected copay or self-pay rate up front. You pick a time, and we send a link to the secure video visit plus a short intake to complete on your phone.

Step 360 minutes

The evaluation

A real conversation with Dr. Justin about what brought you in, what you have tried, and what you want to be different, including sleep, stress, nutrition, and whether lab work would help. You talk through options together, and nothing is decided for you.

You will not be asked to justify why you're here.

Step 4Same visit

A plan you understand

If medication makes sense, you'll hear what it does, what to expect in the first weeks, and what the alternatives are. Prescriptions go to your pharmacy the same day. If therapy or labs would help, we can provide therapy here or coordinate with your current therapist.

Step 5Ongoing

Follow-ups at your pace

Usually every 2 to 4 weeks at first, then monthly or quarterly once you're stable. Refill questions are handled between visits so you're never stuck.

If something isn't working, we change it. Everything is adjustable.

Your provider

Dr. Justin Schwarting, DNP, PMHNP-BC

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and founder of Better Place Now.

Justin has worked in behavioral health since 2005, including six years on inpatient psychiatric units and more than five years in outpatient care, along with community mental health, intensive outpatient programs, and medication-assisted treatment. He earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Arizona and has practiced as a psychiatric nurse practitioner since 2019.

Over the last five years he has completed more than 20,000 patient visits, treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, insomnia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorders, eating disorders, and opioid and alcohol withdrawal. Better Place Now brings the acute-care judgment from the hospital, the pace of high-volume outpatient work, and the integrative approach together in one practice.

The hospital years are where his integrative approach comes from. He saw too many people admitted on a long list of medications that no one had stepped back to look at as a whole, with sleep, stress, nutrition, and medical problems left out of the picture. He started Better Place Now so patients could get a full hour with someone who looks for the root of the problem, without the wait, the drive, or the rush.

Before he was a prescriber, Justin spent several years mentoring children in the foster care system whose parents were struggling with their own mental health. That experience is a big part of why Better Place Now sees kids and teens, and why parents are part of every step.

Justin also has a passion for teaching. He speaks to new nursing graduates at the inpatient hospital about psychiatry, and he mentors and coaches nurse practitioners and nurses who want to bring integrative psychiatry into their own practice, so more patients get care that looks at the whole person. What he teaches is what he practices here.

"I start with the smallest change likely to help and build from there. Medication is a tool, not an identity. My job is to make sure you understand your options well enough to choose."

For facilities and programs

Psychiatric coverage where your patients already are

Our team helps facilities anywhere there are patients who need a prescriber: medical rehab hospitals, inpatient units, detox facilities, IOPs, PHPs, group homes, sober living homes, behavioral health residential facilities (BHRFs), and other programs across Arizona. We provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management for your residents and clients by telehealth, with on-site visits available by appointment.

Dr. Justin brings six years of inpatient psychiatric experience and years in intensive outpatient care, so your program gets a prescriber who understands the pace, documentation, and coordination these settings require. We work with your clinical team, keep notes in a format your staff can use, and handle prior authorizations and AHCCCS requirements.

  • IOP and PHP programs: scheduled evaluation and medication-management blocks
  • Group homes, sober living, and BHRFs: ongoing care coordinated with house staff and case managers
  • Medical rehab hospitals and skilled nursing: consultation when mood, sleep, or behavior slows recovery
  • Inpatient and crisis settings: a prescriber on a predictable schedule
  • Detox and substance use programs: MAT, withdrawal management support, co-occurring care
  • How it works: we agree on a schedule, credential with your payers, and start seeing patients, usually within a few weeks

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

Do I need a referral?

No. You can reach out directly by phone or through the request form. If your insurance plan requires a referral for specialist visits (some HMO plans do), we'll let you know when we verify your benefits.

Can you prescribe controlled medications like stimulants by telehealth?

In many cases, yes. Federal and Arizona rules allow controlled substances to be prescribed by telehealth with appropriate evaluation and monitoring. Some medications require an Arizona-based visit, a prescription monitoring check, or periodic in-person evaluation. Your provider will explain what applies to your situation.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most new patients are scheduled within a week, often sooner. Follow-ups are typically available within a few days.

Do you see children and teens?

Yes. We see kids, teens, and adults. For patients under 18, a parent or legal guardian joins the visit and gives consent. Follow-ups are scheduled around school, and we're glad to coordinate with pediatricians, therapists, and school teams with your permission.

Do you order labs or look at things like sleep and nutrition?

Yes. Many symptoms have more than one cause, so Dr. Justin asks about sleep, stress, nutrition, substances, and medical history at every evaluation, and orders lab work when it could change the plan. Medication is one tool, not the only one.

Do you offer therapy?

Yes. Our core service is psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and we also provide therapy. Many patients do best with both, and getting them in one place means your medication and therapy plans stay coordinated. If you already see a therapist you like, we're glad to work alongside them.

How long will I need to be in treatment?

It depends on what we're treating and how you respond. Some people need a few months of support; others do best with longer-term management. We revisit the plan together at every visit, and the goal is always the least medication that keeps you well.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Your information is protected under HIPAA and Arizona law. We only share information with other providers with your written consent, except in the rare situations the law requires, which your provider will explain.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. For self-pay patients and patients with commercial insurance, Medicare, or TRICARE, late cancellations and missed appointments are charged $75 to the card on file, and insurance does not cover that fee. AHCCCS members and Veterans seen through VA Community Care are never charged a missed appointment fee, in line with those programs' rules. Full details are on our policies page.

What if I need help right now?

Better Place Now is not an emergency service. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room. Arizona's 24/7 crisis line is 1-844-534-4673.
